Wet Wet Wet: Religion Has Helped The Band Oct 19 2007 By John Dingwall
Exclusive: Chatting About God Helps Marti Stay Off Drugs
Click to hear our Exclusive interview and track MARTI PELLOW has connected with his spiritual side for Wet Wet Wet's first studio album in 10 years.
The Clydebank group formed in 1982 and enjoyed a phenomenal run of 25 top 40 singles and enjoyed four No.1 albums before splitting in 1997.
Now they're back with Timeless - possibly their best album - and Marti insists the chance to talk religion with the Wets fifth member, session guitarist Graeme Duffin, has helped him stay off heroin and booze.
Marti said: "I say I am a spiritual person because of what has happened in my life. I'd like to think there is something more going on.
"I don't know if it is a guy in a big white cloud, but I think there must be something because people get so much out of it, like Graeme Duffin in the band.
He's a born-again Christian who has a connection.
We talk all the time about religion. I grew up as a Protestant and my former friends were a mix of Protestants and Catholics. Religion is a good thing in the right hands.
"Back then, it gave us a sense of community. Thankfully all the negative nonsense that comes with being Rangers and Celtic fans is slowly being eradicated "Spiritually, I do have a connection. I get that with Wet Wet Wet and in my life."
Marti shines on new album tracks such as Eyes Wide Open and the single Too Many People, which he puts down to having soul.
He said: "I'm almost nine years clean so I think, fantastic, brilliant. It's the thing Iam most proud of.
"I'm a better person for it and I don't have to put up with nonsense of constantly apologising.
"I can make judgments with clarity which I couldn't if I was using. I dig that.
"I like the discipline that allowed me to do eight shows a week in Broadway, but I am still as daft as ever.
"I've still got to keep that childlike quality that allows a playfulness.
"But being eight years clean is an amazing thing. People ask if I am all right and I am."
But he feels helpless to assist Pete Doherty or Amy Winehouse, despite them going through own drug addictions in public.
"I see a lot of artists today struggling who are high profile," he said.
"I have no words or pearls of wisdom for the likes of Amy and Pete.
"They are good artists in their own right. There must be something going on with Pete, who has his poetry evening and puts pen to paper. People get off on it.
"But when I was having my difficult times, people from the industry, who I didn't think would even know my name, talked to me.
"Good people who were famous called up from all different walks of life to help with positive messages.
"At that time in my life, I needed to hear that."
Timeless has been released on the Wets' own record label - after the big companies turned it down. Wets keyboards player Neil Mitchell revealed the band's arrogance while at the top of the charts might be to blame.
"We paid for the album ourselves and hoped record companies would like it," he said. "But they didn't want to put it out orwork with Wet Wet Wet.
"We are in our forties so the record companies may think we are has-beens.
"Perhaps the labels think we are a spent force.
"Also, we burned a few bridges, which is a shame and we apologise for that.
"We were arrogant and turned up drunk at TV studios.
"It was rock 'n' roll living. We'd turn up at the studio and get bored waiting between takes.
"We would drink for Dutch courage and it snowballed.
"I would drink to loosen up a bit. Even in the studio, I would have a drink to come up with parts I felt I couldn't come up with if I was straight.
"But I don't think the record labels realise we have changed and that we are reasonable people now."
He admits the greatest change of all has been Marti's transformation from heroin addict to consumate professional, winning the BBC's primetime show Just The Two Of Us and performing Chicago on Broadway.
But Neil didn't think that Marti would make it.
HE said:"Marti was in such a bad way with the drink and drugs, I didn't think he would make it out the other end.
"It was good when it came out that Marti was addicted because it was a weight off his shoulders and made him get help.
"But it was really sad and it was hard for him when it became public.
"We were recording an album at the time and he would disappear.
"He wasn't himself so we knew there was something wrong.
"He was in a bad way and we tried to get him to get help, but it was up to him to deal with the problem.
"It was going to take a lot for him not to go back to the drink and drugs. It's all very well to stop for a couple of weeks but I'm proud of what he has done. The change has been unbelievable."
The Wets - Marti, bassist Graeme Clarke, Neil and drummer Tommy Cunningham - will unveil some of their new songs when they perform an intimate charity concert next week.
On Monday, they will play Edinburgh's Hard Rock Cafe for the Caron Keating Foundation to support cancer victims.
"We met Caron at the BBC years ago when she presented Blue Peter," explained Marti.
"She was a beautiful lady. Her mum Gloria Hunniford used to come to see me in Ronnie Scott's jazz club in London because she was a fan of my music.
"It'll be nice to make money for the foundation by singing some songs and possibly get a free meal out of it.
"We could have filled the SECC just from the response for tickets, which we're made up about.
"It seems the Wet Wet Wet fans are very patient with us. We see that on the website. Our fans are eclectic and are always there for us and have an opinion we value.
"We meet them at the concerts and there are still tens of thousands of hardcore Wet Wet Wet fans."

Wet Wet Wet are a musical phenomenon and a British institution. Since their debut in 1987 the band has remained in the British album chart for 284 weeks, in the British singles chart for 212 weeks and holds the record for the most consecutive weeks at number 1 by a UK act (15) while also being one of the most successful live bands in British pop history. Now, 20 years after their first album ‘Popped In Souled Out’ claimed the number 1 spot, the Scottish four-piece of Graeme Clark (bass), Tommy Cunningham (drums), Neil Mitchell (keyboards), and Marti Pellow (lead vocals) release ‘Timeless’, a sublime and polished presentation of pop rock at its best.
With a one-of-a-kind cover design by famed artist Klaus Voormann (also known for the Beatles’ ‘Revolver’ album cover), ‘Timeless’ is an updated twist on the classic Wet Wet Wet formula of melody, harmony and lyric.
As usual, Pellow's voice is immaculate, strong and full but is now set against a combination of luscious guitar chords mixed with the symphonic depth of an orchestra and fantastically hook-laden melodies with gorgeous, crisp production.
Standout tracks include the up-tempo modern rock masterpiece 'Run', the harmonically layered ballad 'Weightless', the melancholic ballad 'Thru’ The Night' and the Beatle-esque 'What Do You Know' whilst lead single 'Too Many People' is a classic Wet Wet Wet blend of soulful pop destined for national airplay.
Wet Wet Wet will be celebrating their successful past, vibrant present and, by the looks of it, a very bright future with a British arena tour in December 2007. 4th Birmingham - Birmingham NEC 5th Manchester - Manchester Evening News Arena 6th Sheffield - Sheffield Arena 8th Belfast - Belfast Odyssey Arena 9th Glasgow - Glasgow SECC 10th Aberdeen - Aberdeen Exhibition Centre 11th Newcastle - Newcastle Arena 13th Cardiff - Cardiff CIA 14th London - Wembley Arena

Absolute Deal For Wet Wet Wet's 'Timeless' October 19, 2007 - Global | Indies
By Lars Brandle, London
Wet Wet Wet will release a new album, "Timeless," on Nov. 12 through a new agreement struck between Absolute Marketing and Distribution and the Scottish pop/rock band's new independent label Dry Records. Universal Music Group will distribute the release, Wet Wet Wet's first studio album in 10 years.
Under the new deal, Absolute, Wet Wet Wet and Glasgow-based management firm No Half Measures will work closely together on marketing, promotion and distribution and all aspects involved in getting the group's new releases to market.
An initial £100,000 ($200,000) national television advertising campaign will help support the 12-track album release, as will a 20th anniversary arena tour, starting Dec. 4 at Birmingham's NEC.
No Half Measures Management's Dougie Souness says the deal leverages the business-power back into Wet Wet Wet's hands.
"Wet Wet Wet have always enjoyed a certain amount of creative control, but now they are completely in charge of their own destiny," says Souness, who has worked with the band for more than 20 years. "They are embracing new technologies and new ways to do things, which ultimately means more direct communication with their audience - to the benefit of everyone."
Henry Semmence, managing director of Absolute, adds: "We are especially pleased that a band with such a successful track record has recognised the benefits of our DIY label model which ensures that creative control and ownership of the music copyright always remains in the hands of the artist."
Launched as an independent "one-stop" label management specialist in 1998, Absolute has recently worked on album releases by UB40, Darren Hayes, Shirley Bassey, Melanie C and Ocean Colour Scene.
The company says its appeal to artists is in being able to market and distribute an album, while ownership of the music copyright remains with the artist or the artist's label.

LIVES ANCIENS puissance de la voix de MARTI et puissance du groupe de l'époque avec de vrais lives de qualité :flower:
It was 1984 when Wet Wet Wet brought in Graeme as guitarist on advice of music writer Tom Morton who had seen Graeme play with another band. Graeme was employed as a session guitarist. Over the years Graeme's role grew in the band and he's considerd to be the 5th Wets member by the band... although not official. When Graeme just started in the band Marti was saying: "We've got this new bloke, Graeme Duffin, on guitar and it's amazing, you just give him an idea and he plays it". Graeme has been with the Wets for many years now ...actually The Wets are celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2007.
Graeme just loves being on stage, performing and doing what he does best.

Back playing the fairground of pop again — Wet Wet Wet are enjoying themselves.
By Kevin Bridges
Their many fans will be thrilled that Wet Wet Wet, one of Scotland’s most successful bands, are back with a brand new studio album. Their first in a decade, Timeless, will be released next week, with the single Too Many People on sale tomorrow. The band have also joined the ever-increasing number of acts choosing to release music on their own label, which they’ve humorously called Dry Records! Drummer Tommy Cunningham says after their successful 2004 reunion tour making new music together was the inevitable next step. “We had two choices — be one of those bands who get together every three or four years and do the nostalgia trip or we could do some new music. We didn’t just want to go out and tour the old songs, we wanted to do something new to get the juices flowing again,” he said. “We took things slowly — doing a few sessions here and there never sure whether or not we’d implode, but it was a joy and we came up with little gems along the way. Confidence “There’s a confidence about us now but it’s not cockiness or swagger.” The sound of the album is simple and unfussy, allowing the trademark ballads to speak for themselves. “We’re not attempting to emulate any of the great modern bands. We’ve travelled that road. We are Wet Wet Wet, this is a new chapter for us.” The band are also looking forward to playing the new material live and their winter tour takes in big gigs at Glasgow’s SECC on December 9 and the Aberdeen AECC on the 10th. “We’re doing new arrangements of some of the old songs. For example, we’re doing Wishing I Was Lucky with a sort of Latin groove. It’s a bit of fun and makes it interesting for us. “However, we’ll definitely be doing the hits people love. You’d be disappointed if you paid good money to see someone and they didn’t do their hits — we’re happy to indulge our fans.” Delighted Tommy is delighted the band are releasing the record on their own label. “A lot of people have started to go down that route. In a way it was almost forced on us — we took three or four key tracks to a major label and they just said ‘we don’t hear a single’. “The companies are a little scared of us and don’t know how to promote us, but we’ve always wanted total control over our own destiny anyway.” Marti Pellow is also thrilled with the artistic control having their own label has given them. “It’s a great luxury to have that freedom and we’ve embraced that, even down to the sleeve design. “We always had a certain amount of artistic freedom because we’d had hit records. When you’ve sold millions you get to do what you like, but in other ways we’ve made changes. “For example, we’ve made sure our itinerary is less crazy. In the early days when we were doing promotional tours they’d make you visit four countries in a day!” Marti admits he’s not sure how having their own label may work out in the future. The band may even sign up other acts. New music “Who knows what might happen. We’re all fans of new music and maybe the whole thing will mushroom into something bigger. We’ll have to see how we do with our own record first, but I hope I never feel like a company executive. “I think it’s important to have that love and passion for music. Some of the best record company bosses, like David Geffen, have always had a bug-eyed enthusiasm for music.” The lads are thrilled that on their new album the artwork was done by none other than Klaus Voorman, famous for his classic cover of The Beatles’ Revolver. “It’s one of our favourite albums and we were thinking we should go for similar imagery for this. Then someone said, ‘Hold on why don’t we try and track down Klaus himself?’ “We managed to get him on the phone and he said he was a fan and asked if he could hear some of the new music,” Marti explained. “He got back to us and said the music had really inspired him and could he come on board for the project. We weren’t about to say no! “He even came up with the album title as he said he thought the new music was timeless. We didn’t have to sit for him, though — we sent him photos by computer and he did the rest. “I like the idea that people will look at the sleeve and see it as art and talk about it. I always used to like looking at the big gatefold sleeves Roger Dean did for Yes, but CDs more or less killed off the whole cover art thing.” It’s great to have Wet Wet Wet back and sounding so excited about this new chapter in their 20-year career.
