Irish hitmaker Ronan Keating is expected to heat up TV screens next week when he makes his Australian television acting debut in Nine’s award-winning drama, Love Child.

Joining the series as Dr Lawrence Faber — Joan’s (Perth’s Jessica Marais) former flame who got a mere mention in the first season — Keating says his u

“There’s a lot of history with Joan, they were an item back in England,” the 40-year-old explains.
“You don’t hear a thing about him right up until the moment he walks in. It’s very unexpected for Joan and she’s not happy at all when Lawrence appears. It’s quite an exciting and fiery opening to that episode.”

While Lawrence claims to be in Australia on business, Keating says he has other ideas in mind.
“He’s over in (Kings Cross) trialling this new ultrasound machine that has never been seen before in Australia, but he’s actually coming over to try and win Joan over and bring her back to England,” he says.

“So that’s kind of where this is all coming from.”

While he hadn’t seen the series prior to being approached for the role, after binge-watching several episodes and reading more about his character, Keating was hooked.

“They sent me past episodes which I watched and then they sent me the scripts and I really liked the character, I thought he was someone I could work with and that he’d bring something to the screen,” he says.
“I liked the idea that he was an Irish guy coming to Australia, and given my relationship with Australia, all of these things just made my decision (to do the role) much easier.

“I’ve enjoyed the script and I’ve enjoyed the character. I’ve just built the character and put a back story together in my head so that every scene I walk into I have that kind of baggage with me so I know who Lawrence is.”
“I’ve been at it for a while now, from about 2000 I’ve been taking on different acting roles and I’ve done a lot of readings and castings and so on.”

Keating says he was touched by the stories at the heart of the series, particularly given the harrowing predicament faced by young unwed mothers during the 60s and 70s was also widespread in Ireland.
“The storylines are really interesting and also educational, it was an interesting time in the 70s in Sydney and across Australia, as it was in Ireland, it was a very similar situation over there, where children were taken away from their mothers,” he says.
“In Catholic Ireland, it was unheard of that a (woman) would be pregnant out of wedlock and it was far worse over in Ireland than it was in Australia.”

While it is the former reality TV judge’s first major role on Australian television, acting has long been on the cards for Keating, who recently appeared on the big screen in the World War II drama Another Mother’s Son and starred alongside Magda Szubanski in the 2013 film Goddess.

“I’ve been at it for a while now, from about 2000 I’ve been taking on different acting roles and I’ve done a lot of readings and castings and so on,” he says.
“It can be difficult for directors and producers to put someone like me into one of their films or their shows, because some people can’t see past the fact that it’s that guy on stage singing or whatever it may be, so it meant that I had to prove myself in that situation.”
Love Child airs on Tuesday at 8.30pm on Nine.

Love Child: Ronan Keating returns to OZ... again
Set up the guest room, because Ronan Keating is back in town! Over the years, the Irish singer has graced our screens as a judge on The X Factor and a coach on The Voice. Now, he’s starring as
Dr Lawrence Faber alongside Jessica Marais in Love Child. We’re starting to think of him as the long-lost cousin who came to visit and never left. He can overstay his welcome at our place anytime.

It's going to be a big year for Ronan Keating.

The 40-year-old recently became a dad again, will celebrate 25 years since his former band Boyzone first got together, and just wrapped filming his very first TV role – as Dr Lawrence Faber on Nine's Love Child.

TheFIX caught up with the singer-turned-thespian on his recent trip to Australia to talk all things acting, superheroes, and his friendship with George Michael.

Ronan, welcome to Australia! How is it being back Down Under?
It's great. I always enjoy being back here…it's like home to me now. I try to make twice-a-year trips down, so it's nice to be back.
'
Tell us about your Love Child character.
Dr Lawrence was spoken about in season one, actually. He's the ex-fiancé of Joan (Jessica Marais). So he was spoken about briefly a couple of times in the show but we've never met him before.

They were an item in England where she studied and became an obstetrician, so there's a lot of history there but it ended badly.

Basically they aborted a child, she left England and came to Australia. That’s pretty much the top of season one.

And then here we are season four, and Lawrence walks back into her life and thinks everything is going to be okay. He basically wants to try and win Joan over again and bring her back to England and through episode 7 and 8 in season four it's a tug-o-war between the two of them and it's very exciting, very interesting stuff.

What was it like on set? How was working with Jessica?
It's brilliant. All the cast were great, and Jess is a brilliant actress, so working alongside her was fantastic. As was Dan Hamill, and all the other cast.
Everyone was brilliant.

You've made a couple of films, but this is your first TV role. What's the best bit of acting advice you've received?
The best I've ever heard is 'Walk into the room, look them in the eye, and tell them the truth'. That was fantastic and so true. I've got a lot of great friends who are well known actors, and I do genuinely reach out to them and look for advice.

Someone I've really looked up to who has been there and mentored me a lot of the way is Russell Crowe. Russell's been fantastic and helping me and guiding me and making the right decisions as well as being a better actor. I've known him for seven or eight years now.

Love Child is an amazing show to guest star on. Are they are any other shows you'd like to have a role on?
Yeah absolutely, I love TV. I've got a lot of shows that I'm a big fan of. Everything from 24 to Game of Thrones to Suits. The list is endless. [My wife] Storm and I spend out evenings watching TV.

There are so many fantastic different shows out there, and then all this Marvel and DC comic stuff and so on that have been entertaining us for so many years now. As a kid I was a big superhero fan as most kids were so it's great to see them come to the big screen like they have.

Who is your favourite superhero?
I've always been a Batman fan. Always. I think the fact that he's a human being. He doesn't have powers; he has this ability even though he's a human. It makes it more realistic. I always latched onto that more than someone who could fly. I think Batman is as cool as they come.

Any actors you'd love to work with in the future?
I recently watched a brilliant film called Arrival on the plane and Jeremy Renner, he's just amazing at the moment, can do no wrong. He's just a brilliant, brilliant actor.

Then you see Logan. I saw the last installment to the Wolverine films. I'm a big fan of Hugh Jackman. I think he's incredible. It was kind of sad to see the end of that but, wow, what a film. He was so believable, so brilliant. He's a real talent.

You paid tribute to George Michael when he died in December. How did you know him?
I got to know George 20 years ago. I grew up listening to George Michael. He was my musical mentor. He's the reason I'm a singer today and he's always been a hero of mine.

We were lucky enough to become friends – I was lucky enough to become a friend of his should I say. Heartbreaking.

It's still very raw for me that he's gone. I still can't believe it. When we got the news it was just devastating. Absolutely devastating. I couldn't believe it. I can't believe he's gone.

Ronan's Love Child episode will air Tuesday, June 13 on Nine at 8.30pm.
