Speaking to the Mirror, Ronan said: “I wish Steven was here. I wear red socks every night, because it was Steven’s favourite colour, so when I take my trousers off in one scene you can see them. It’s my little thing to dip my cap to Steo.

“I’ve been off the drink for four weeks, you have to for clarity and absolute focus.
“I did eight shows last week and had one day off and I’m still tired.

Ronan Keating says was 'stressed' by West End debut in Once but gets rave reviews

Speaking afterwards, Keating looked back at his first week in the show.

“The stress and fear when I walked out was overwhelming but once I got into it, it was wonderful,” he said.

His London stage debut has been “the most liberating experience”, he added.

Keating fans the flames of love... while trying to keep his fans at bay

Ronan Keating in Once the Musical – Phoenix Theatre

Most vital of all though is a Guy’s chemistry with his Girl and both Keating and Jill Winternitz ensure this is as true and honest as it should be. The latter brings a haunting intensity and yearning to her role and it is heartbreaking to witness the sacrifice she makes at the story’s conclusion.

REVIEW: Ronan Keating Makes Impressive West End Debut In 'Once'
★★★★

You may be used to seeing Ronan Keating on stage with his Boyzone band members, but last night we saw the singer in a totally different light, as he made his West End debut in the musical Once.

Once received a lot of love when it opened on Broadway in 2012 and despite being more low key on the London scene last year, Ronan has made sure that the musical adaptation of the Irish film came back with a bang last night, as he and the rest of the cast put on an impressive performance for press and VIPs at the Phoenix Theatre. Although he later admitted his nerves in a Q & A that took place after the show, Ronan played the part of heartbroken busker 'Guy' perfectly, with him finding his love of music and life once again when he meets 'Girl' who is played by the wonderful Jill Winternitz.

Ronan plays heartbroken busker Guy in the West End musical (Dan Wooller)

Jill comes across Ronan when he's playing acoustic guitar in an empty street and despite only just meeting one another, it's pretty much certain in the opening scene that he would fall in love with the single Czech mother, especially when they both reveal their musical talents. You can tell that Ronan's playing a part that's incredibly close to his heart, with him also telling us after the show that the experiences of Guy were pretty similiar to those that he went through with Boyzone when the band first started out. The 10 actors and singers that helped tell the tale were also great, but nothing could outshine Keating's natural talent and shockingly good acting skills. Even if he was already at an advantage because of his Irish accent.

The music, written by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, no doubt make Ronan feel right at home, because it definitely had a bit of his own feel to it. Although he's used to performing to thousands in arenas, his band mates were amongst the crowd to cheer him on and make him feel more at home last night, as he swapped the masses for the intimate venue.

The chemistry between Ronan and Jill just added to the love story and although the singer admitted that he was extremely nervous before the show, because of all the big names in the audience, it didn't take him long to settle in and by the end, the crowd were definitely left wanting more.

With this just being the start of Ronan's three month stint, he admitted to us that he did "feel naked and exposed" when first taking to the stage. "The stress and fear when I walked out was overwhelming. But once I got into it, it was wonderful," he confessed.

He also said that he dedicated each performance by wearing his lucky red socks for his late bandmate Stephen Gately, who tragically died in 2009 at the age of 33. Stephen had also mixed Boyzone with the West End, starring in the likes of Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Despite Ronan admitting that rehearsals had been pretty gruelling, he didn't rule out doing another musical, and judging by him being the perfect fit for Once, no doubt he'll be getting a few more offers in the future. A solid ★★★★ from us.

Ronan Keating constantly devastated as movie stardom plans are dashed

The Boyzone star finds films he signs up for never go ahead

Ronan Keating has found his dreams for movie stardom keep being dashed – because films he signs up for always fail to go ahead.

The Boyzone star said he has been cast in an “exciting” movie next year – but hopes he won’t be disappointed like in the past.

He said: “There is something on the way, possibly in the New Year. I might be doing something which is exciting.

“But I’ve been offered things before – you get it, you say you’re doing it, and then all of a sudden it doesn’t happen.”

And Ronan is still trying to sort things so that a film version of Broadway hit Stones In His Pockets can go ahead.

He added: “We’re still trying to get that final funding together and when we get that in, we’re green-lit and ready to go, which is very exciting.”
