U2 dedication to Stephen Gately

Over the last two shows in Texas the band have dedicated Unforgettable Fire to Stephen Gately. One of the singers in Irish band Boyzone, Gately passed away this week. At the shows in Houston and Dallas during Unforgettable Fire, U2 remembered Gately, calling him "a beautiful spirit and a bright flame".

members of Boyzone are in Los Angeles this weekend, at the invitation of U2, to attend their concert in the Rose Bowl stadium, Pasadena.

Singers Ronan Keating and Keith Duffy are among the specially invited guests attending the live show.

U2 frontman Bono pays tribute to Stephen Gately with Unforgettable Fire - hear it here

U2 frontman Bono dedicated a song to his friend, tragic Boyzone singer Stephen Gately, during their ground-breaking global webcast YouTube gig last night.

The rock giants were playing the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles before the biggest crowd the venue had ever seen - estimated to be 100,000 -and the whole gig was streamed live on the video website.

Half way through their hit The Unforgettable Fire, an emotional Bono suddenly uttered the words: "Stephen Gately, a beautiful spirit. A bright shining star."

The gig was opened by Black Eyed Peas, who were introduced by Guns N Roses legend Slash, who then launched into Sweet Child O' Mine.

However, female Pea Fergie appeared to fluff the words in the the second verse and needed cues from bandmate Will.I.am.

U2 took to the stage on the East Berlin side of the Brandenburg Gate, a live set for the MTV EMA's.

the band also picked up 'Best Live Act' at the MTV EMA's.
